Peale’s falcon in Akigase Park

About 25 people were waiting for the arrival of Japanese waxwing in the wild-bird garden of Akigase Park. Suddenly, some people turned the telephoto lens into the sky. A bird of prey was flying high above the sky. It was hard to see with the naked eye, but when I tried to enlarge the picture it was the Eastern buzzard. Suddenly another bird of prey appeared and approached the Eastern buzzard.

Suddenly another bird of prey appeared and approached the Eastern buzzard. The size of this bird of prey is about the same as that of the buzzard and the figure looks falcon. Two birds of prey seemed to begin fighting territory but obviously the falcon looked superior.

The falcon approached the buzzard again. Obviously the buzzard was afraid of the falcon. This falcon is as big as the buzzard and its appearance looks much darker than the buzzard. From this fact, it seems that this falcon is a subspecies Peale’s falcon (Falco peregrinus pealei).

Two birds of prey flew away in opposite directions after the closest approach. As I heard that a Peale’s falcon is staying around this park last time (Feb. 9, 2018), it seems that this falcon is that individual. Peale’s falcon is found along the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands to the far eastern Bering Sea coast of Russia and is non-migratory, and then it may be rare to see the Peale’s falcon in Japan. Coincidentally, I was able to see the precious scene.

Falco peregrinus pealei, described by Ridgway in 1873, is also known as Peale’s falcon, and includes rudolfi. It is found in the Pacific Northwest of North America, northwards from the Puget Sound along the British Columbia coast (including the Queen Charlotte Islands), along the Gulf of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands to the far eastern Bering Sea coast of Russia, and may also occur on the Kuril Islands and the coasts of Kamchatka. It is non-migratory. It is the largest subspecies, and it looks like an oversized and darker tundrius or like a strongly barred and large anatum. The bill is very wide. Juveniles occasionally have pale crowns. Males weigh 700 to 1,000 g, while females weigh 1,000 to 1,500 g.
