公園の野鳥の森付近から「ホイホイホイ」というサンコウチョウのさえずりが聞こえた。10人位の方が望遠レンズを鳥の方向に向けていた。 望遠レンズの方向を探すとようやくオスのサンコウチョウに気付いたが、暗い木陰の木の枝に止まっていたので肉眼ではなかなか見つけられなかった。
I heard the call “hoi-hoi-hoi” of Japanese paradise flycatcher from near the wild bird forest of the park. About 10 persons were directing the telephoto lens to the bird. Looking for the direction of it I finally noticed a male Japanese paradise flycatcher, though it was hard to find it with my naked eye because it perched on a branch of a tree in a dark shade.
繁殖期のサンコウチョウのオスは体長の3倍くらいの長い尾羽を持つ。サンコウチョウ属には14種含まれるが長い尾羽を持つ種が多いようだ。 サンコウチョウは飛ぶ昆虫を捕食するのでかつてはヒタキ科に分類されていた。南北アメリカに生息するタイランチョウ科の鳥の多くも 飛ぶ昆虫を捕食する。私はパラグアイで長い尾羽を持つ ズグロエンビタイランチョウが尾羽を広げて飛ぶ昆虫を捕食する光景を見たが、 長い尾羽は空中姿勢を微妙に制御するのに役立つように見えた。
The male Japanese paradise flycatcher in breeding season has long tail feathers about 3 times of its body size. The genus Terpsiphone includes 14 species and many of them have long tail feathers. The Japanese paradise flycatcher was previously classified with the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae. Many birds of Tyranchidae inhabiting the Americas prey on flying insects. I saw a scene of a Fork-tailed Flycatcher with very long tail feathers preying insects spreading the tail feathers. The long tail appeared to be useful for delicate controlling of the aerial posture.
