木をつつかずアリを舐め取るキツツキの変わり者アリスイ, Eurasian wryneck, eccentric woodpecker that eats ants instead of pecking the tree.
桜草公園のアリスイはインターネットでよく知られている。2019年2月12日、晴れたので公園に行ってみるとアリスイを見ることができた。昨年は公園訪問のタイミングが悪く会えなかった。アリスイが木の幹に止まった。全身が良く見える。普通の鳥の姿勢だが、尾羽はキツツキ科の鳥らしく丈夫そうだ。
The Eurasian wryneck at Primrose Park is well known on the internet. As it was sunny on February 12, 2019 I visited to the park and saw the wryneck. Last year I was unable to meet the wryneck because of the poor timing of the visit of the park. Now, the wryneck is on the tree trunk so the whole body is visible better. It is an ordinary bird’s posture, but the tail feathers seem to be strong like a bird of the woodpecker family.
アリスイの特徴ある行動の一つ、その英名（wryneck=よじれ首）が示すように、頭部をほぼ180度回転させることができるため首をねじって樹洞の中の昆虫を取ることができる。この時の姿勢（左写真）をシマヘビの写真（右写真）と較べて見ると、確かに擬態と言えるほど似ている。
One of the characteristic actions of the wryneck, as its English name suggests, is ability to turn the head almost 180 degrees so it can wry the neck and take insects in the sinus of the tree. 公園に行くと地元のトリビトさんが親切に教えてくれた。「今、あの木の根元の藪にアリスイがいる。待ってれば出てくる。」待っているとシジュウカラの群れがその藪に入った。まもなくシジュウカラと一緒にアリスイも飛び出して少し離れた木の根元に移動した。トリビトさん：「今日のアリスイの行動はいつもと違うな。」アリスイは野焼きした地面にではなく、木の根元に降りた。見ている我々3人はアリスイの特徴ある動作が良く分かる写真を撮れた。良かった、良かった！
When I went to the park, a local birder told me kindly. “There is a wryneck in the bush at the base of that tree, and it will come out if you wait.” When waiting, a group of tits flew in the bush. Soon the wryneck flew out with the tits and moved to the base of the tree a little away. “The wryneck’s behavior is different from usual.” said the birder. The wryneck flew down to the base of the tree, not on the burned ground. Three watchers of us were able to take pictures of the wryneck’s characteristic behavior well. It was good, good!
アリスイはキツツキ科の鳥なのに木をつつく動作はしない。主な餌はアリや昆虫であり、地表や朽木の中に長い舌を伸ばして捕食する。旧大陸に広く分布し、日本には夏季北部に繁殖のため飛来し冬季に南部で越冬する。 日本ではアリを食べるキツツキは珍しいが、私はパラグアイでアリを食べるキツツキ（アリツカゲラ）を公園などで良く見た。
Eurasian wryneck belongs the species of woodpecker but it does not peck the tree. Their chief prey is ants and other insects, and they prey by stretching long tongue in decaying wood or on the ground. It distributes widely in the Old World; in Japan, migrates for breeding in the north part during the summer and winters in the south part. In Japan, woodpecker that eats ants is unusual, but I often saw ant-eating woodpecker in parks in Paraguay.
