1893年に出版された美術と工芸の雑誌「ステューディオ」の特集号はヴォイジーが表紙を担当した。二人の天使が手にしている百合は美を、棒におもりがついた遠心調速機は機械を象徴しており、両社が手を取り合う姿はモットーの”USE AND BEAUTY”すなわち「実用と美」の融合を意味する。背景の牧歌的な風景はヴォイジーが描くユートピア社会であり、機械生産を受容した手工芸運動の新たな決意を示唆しているようだ。

A special issue of the arts and crafts magazine Studio published in 1893. The cover was designed by Charles Francis Annesley Voysey. The lily held by the two angels symbolizes beauty, and the centrifugal governor with a weight attached to a stick symbolizes machinery, and the sight of them holding hands signifies the motto, the fusion of “practicality and beauty”. The idyllic landscape in the background is Voysey’s depiction of a utopian society, and seems to suggest the new determination of the handicraft movement as it embraces machine production.
