後期高齢者ともなると、私がこれまでに購入した本を整理する必要がある。専門書は殆ど物理学関係書だ。コンピュータのプログラム関係の雑誌も多く購入した。社会科学関係書もある。芸術分野の本もある。趣味のオーディオ雑誌もある。子供の頃科学への憧れを醸成してくれた手塚治虫のマンガも沢山ある。

As I get older, I need to organize the books I’ve
purchased so far. Most of the specialized books are physics-related. I also
bought many magazines related to computer programs. There are also books
related to social sciences. There are also books on the arts. There are also
audio magazines, which are my hobby. There are also many manga by Osamu Tezuka,
which fostered my admiration for science as a child.

退職後にJICAシニア海外ボランティアとしてシリアとパラグアイに派遣され仕事をした。電子工学分野の専門的な仕事だったので、専門書を必要とした。本を沢山持参することはできないので、ドキュメントスキャナーを購入して本をPDFにして持参した。さらに、引っ越しを契機にたくさんの本を処分することにした。単に紙資源にするのは忍びないので、大事な本は時間をかけてPDFにした。ドキュメントスキャナーで読めるように裁断した本は紙資源にだした。日本語では、終活とかいってますね。

After retiring, I was dispatched to Syria and Paraguay as a JICA senior overseas volunteer. It was a specialized job in the field of electronics, so I needed specialized books. Since I couldn’t bring many books with me, I bought a document scanner and converted the books into PDFs and brought them with me. Furthermore, when I moved, I decided to get rid of many books. I couldn’t bear to simply throw them away as paper resources, so I took the time to convert important books into PDFs. I cut the books so that they could be read on the document scanner and put them away as paper resources. In Japanese, we call it “Shukatsu. (End of life activities)”
