パワフルなくちばしを持つイカル, Japanese grosbeak with powerful bill

2016年3月13日、柏市にある柏の葉公園を早朝散歩した。これまでによくシメを見かけた広場の林に行くと、10羽以上のシメの群れがいた。 シメは地上の落ち葉を掻き分けて餌を取っていたが、中にくちばしの黄色い別の鳥も2，3羽混じっていた。この鳥の体形はシメと似ているが 頭部の色が異なるので、シメと同じアトリ科のイカルだ。
On March 13, 2016, I strolled in Kashiwanoha Park in Chiba early in the morning. When I went to the forest of an open field where I often saw Hawfinches, there was a group of them more than 10. The hawfinches were having bait pushing aside dead leaves, but there were two or three different birds with yellow bill in the group. The shape of this bird resembles the Hawfinch, but is Japanese grosbeak of the same family as the Hawfinch because the color of the head is different.

この場所にはエノキの大木がある。エノキは直径5，6㎜の球形の果実をつける。落ち葉の下には落下した沢山のエノキの果実が散らばっているようだ。 イカルとシメは冬季にこの場所を訪れ、太いくちばしで硬い種子を割って中身をたべている。
There is a big tree of Chinese hackberry in this place. The Chinese hackberry produces spherical fruit of 5 or 6 mm in diameter. A lot of dropped fruit of the tree seems to be scattered under the dead leaves. The Japanese grosbeak and the Hawfinch visit this place in the winter season and eat the content of the seed by breaking the hard shell with the big bill.

全長は約23cm。太く黄色い嘴を持つ。額から頭頂、顔前部、風切羽の一部が光沢のある濃い紺色で体の上面と腹は灰褐色で 下腹から下尾筒は白い。初列風切羽に白斑がある。雌雄同色である。
The signature feature of the Japanese grosbeak is its large, pointed bright yellow bill. The adult grosbeak has a large black marking extending from the nape to the chin and ear-coverts to the neck. The side of the neck is a contrasting pale whitish grey. The bird’s underside is a more dull grey. The back is greyish-brown while the flanks are washed with a gingery or tawny-brown colour. The wings and tail are black but for a white patch on the inner-coverts and band of white in the middle of the primaries, which is visible in flight.
