Baikal teal, a duck which breeds within the forest zone of eastern Siberia and migrates to warmer countries in winter including Japan.

On March 22, 2020, I went to Minuma Natural Park in Saitama City. Yoshino cherry trees were blooming and there were many families. Many Eurasian wigeons were staying in the pond. Only one Baikal teal was accidentally mixed with them.

Previously (January 6, 2020), I saw a group of 50 Baikal teals in Tega Pond, but I couldn’t take clear pictures because of the distance. Because the pond is not so large, flocks of duck care little for visitors to the park. When you look at the Baikal teal (male) closely, you can see black, green, yellow, and white tomoe figures (comma-shaped figures) on the head. In particular, green color looks beautiful depending on the direction of the light. The species name is formosa, which means “beautiful”.

When the Baikal teal is seen from the front and the back, the shape is similar to Mallard, etc., but the pattern of the plumage differs greatly.

On the Internet, it was talked that “A rare wild bird, Chinese grey shrike came flying, it was discovered on March 7, etc. ” and so I thought it would be nice to see it. When I arrived at the farmland next to Higashi High School about 40 minutes from Nanasato Station, I saw a lot of people pointing their telephoto lenses, so I knew where the shrike was. Shrike seems to be staying at the same place for a long time. It was good to be seen.
I also saw information that Baikal teal was staying at Minuma Natural Park, so at around 11 o’clock I walked further south for about 30 minutes and went to the park. Many Eurasian wigeons were staying in the pond. Only one Baikal teal was accidentally mixed with them. It was nice to see this too.
