A Bull-headed shrike has caught a house centipede.

On March 3, 2017, I strolled in Mizumoto Park. A Bull-headed shrike has flew down on the bank of the “Kingfisher’s Pond”. It seems to have found a prey. After staring at the ground where fallen leaves were piled, the shrike picked up the prey immediately.

The prey caught by the shrike is like a house centipede because I can see a lot of long legs. Bull-headed shrike is carnivorous and eats insets and arthropods. On the other hand, House centipede is also carnivorous and preys on insects. It is a natural enemy of cockroaches and then is a beneficial worm for human. House centipede would self-cut legs when attacked by natural enemies such as birds, but the shrike seemed to have better skill than the house centipede.

The shrike immediately ate the house centipede and returned to the tree branch nearby. It seems that the shrike likes this place because various insects and worms live around the “Kingfisher’s Pond”.
