木をつつかずアリを舐め取るキツツキの変わり者アリスイ, Eurasian wryneck, eccentric woodpecker that eats ants instead of pecking the tree.
ここに来るアリスイは一羽だけのようだが、他にツグミ、ムクドリ、カワラバト、タヒバリなどたくさんの野鳥が来る。ツグミがアリスイの近くに来た。「あんた、何を食ってるの？」アリスイは無関心の様子。アリスイとツグミが並んだところを見ると、脚を除けばほぼ同じ大きさに見える。アリスイはスズメより大きい。
The Eurasian wryneck hear seems to be only one, but many other wild birds come, such as Dusky thrush, White-cheeked starling, Rock dove, Water pipit, etc. A thrush came near the wryneck. “What are you eating?” The wryneck was indifferent to the thrush. Looking at the place where the wryneck and the thrush are lined up, they seem to be almost the same size except for the legs. The wryneck is bigger than the sparrow.
アリスイはこの草焼きした草原で餌を探すようだ。この場所は柵で囲まれていて人は入れないので、中で餌を探す野鳥にとっては良い場所だ。アリスイは地面に頭部を突っ込んだり、地面やヨシの中の虫を長い舌を使って捕食している。
The Eurasian wryneck seems to search for bait in this burned area. This place is surrounded by a fence and no one can enter, so it is a good place for wild birds looking for bait inside. The wryneck is preying insects by stretching long tongue on the ground or in the reed stem.
2019年2月12日、晴れたので埼玉県の桜草公園に行った。当地の「田島ヶ原サクラソウの自生地」は国の特別天然記念物に指定されている。冬に草焼きをしているようで、枯れた雑草が焼き払われた地にはたくさんの野鳥が餌を探しに来る。ここに飛来するアリスイはインターネットでよく知られている。昨年は公園訪問のタイミングが悪く会えなかった。日本ではアリを食べるキツツキは珍しいが、私はパラグアイでアリを食べるキツツキ（アリツカゲラ）を公園などで良く見た。
As it was sunny on February 12, 2019, I visited Primrose Park in Saitama prefecture. “Tajimagahara Wild Primrose Area” is designated as a Special Natural Monument of the country. It seems that this area is burned in the winter, and a lot of wild birds come to search for bait in the area where dead grasses are burned away. The Eurasian wryneck that flew in this area is well known on the internet. Last year I was unable to meet the wryneck because of the poor timing to visit the park. In Japan, woodpecker that eats ants is unusual, but I often saw ant-eating woodpecker in parks in Paraguay.
