日本では冬鳥として渡来し、最も普通にみられる大型のセグロカモメ, European herring gull, the big gull seen most commonly as a winter bird in Japan.

2017年3月3日、水元公園を散歩した。帰り道、中川にかかる橋を渡っているとき、岸辺で大きい魚の死体をついばんでいるカモメに気付いた。カモメの背中と翼上面は明るい灰色で、頭部、首、腹、尾は白い。くちばしは黄色く、下くちばしの先端近くに1つだけ赤い斑点があり脚は薄いピンクだ。このような特徴からこのカモメはセグロカモメのようだ。魚は随分大きい。ハクレンだろうか？
On February 26, 2017, I strolled in Mizumoto Park. On my way home, when I crossed the bridge across Nakagawa River, I noticed a seagull tearing into dead flesh on the bank of the river. The seagull has a grey back upper wings and white head and underparts. The wingtips are black with white spots. The bill is yellow with a red spot. The legs are thin pink. From this feature, this gull seems to be the European herring gull. The fish is quite big. Is it a Silver carp?
