満月となった2023年の中秋の名月
2023年9月29日は中秋の名月だったので写真を撮った。黒く見える部分は海と呼ばれる。拡大してみると海はほぼ円形のクレーターの集まりのように見える。なぜ黒いのか？月の地表の下に溶岩がある時期に隕石が衝突して大きいクレーターができた。クレーターの底から玄武岩質の溶岩がにじみ出てクレーターが埋められたため構造がなく黒く見える、と説明されている。月は地球に対し不釣り合いなほど大きな衛星だ（月の直径は地球の1/4強）。地球誕生のころ、火星ほどの大きさの天体が衝突した結果月が誕生したという。新しいデータによりさらに解明が進むだろう。
September 29, 2023 was a harvest moon, so I took a photo. The part that looks black is called the lunar mare. When zoomed in, the lunar mare looks like a collection of roughly circular craters. why is it black? When there was lava beneath the surface of the moon, a meteorite struck and created a large crater. It is explained that basaltic lava oozed from the bottom of the crater, filling it up and giving it a structureless, black appearance.
The moon is a disproportionately large satellite compared to the Earth (the moon’s diameter is just over 1/4 of the Earth’s diameter). Around the time the Earth was formed, the Moon was formed as a result of a collision between a celestial body the size of Mars. New data will shed further light.
