On December 29, 2017, I went to Kasai Rinkai Park for the first time. This park is also known as a bird watching place. I arrived around 8:00 and walked around the park. There were various ducks on the seaside, but I could not identify them because the distance was far. I tried to take pictures anyway.
These three birds looked different from other ducks. Looking at the picture, it seems like a Common merganser or a Red-breasted merganser though it is not clear because it was far. It seems to be the Red-breasted merganser from the feature that the boundary between the head and chest plumage is unclear. Red-breasted merganser is a diving duck distributed in the northern area of the old and the new worlds. It is migratory and winters also in coastal waters in Japan.
