2024年1月22日、水元公園を散歩した。水元公園の林から帰る途中、ハスの生える川沿いでカワラヒワ3羽が木（アキニレ）の実をとって食べている場面に出会った。
On January 22, 2024, I took a walk in Mizumoto Park. On my way back from the forest in Mizumoto Park, I came across a group of three Oriental Greenfinches picking and eating nuts of a tree (Lacebark elm) along a river where lotuses grow.
カワラヒワはポピュラーな野鳥なので、これまであまり注意してこなかった。日本国内では亜種カワラヒワのほか、亜種オオカワラヒワが見られることを知らなかった。カワラヒワは留鳥だが、オオカワラヒワは主に冬鳥として観察されるとある。オオカワラヒワの特徴は、全体に体色が薄く、頭部から肩にかけて灰色がかること、三列風切の白い縁の幅が広いこと、カワラヒワより大きいことなどが挙げられている。
Oriental Greenfinch is popular wild bird, so I haven’t paid much attention to it until now. I didn’t know that in addition to the subspecies Carduelis sinica minor, there is also a subspecies Carduelis sinica kawarahiba that can be found in Japan and its English name is Grey-capped Greenfinch. The C. s. minor is a resident bird, but the C. s. kawarahiba is mainly observed as a winter bird. Characteristics of the C. s. kawarahiba include that it has a thin overall appearance, has a gray tinge from head to shoulders, has a wide white edge on its Tertial pattern, and is larger than the C. s. minor.
このカワラヒワはどちらだろうか？曇り空背景写真なので色調は明瞭でない。野鳥の体色は、直射日光、日陰、光の方向で羽衣の色合いや濃さが変わって見える。羽毛にある微細な構造によって生じる構造色の影響が大きい種（カワセミなど）もある。冬鳥であるヨシガモ（オス）の頭部は輝く緑色に見えるが、光の方向によっては黒っぽく見える。今回のカワラヒワを見た季節は冬であり、スズメよりやや大きく見えたのでオオカワラヒワではなかろうか。

In some species (such as the kingfisher), the structural color produced by the micro-structures in their feathers has a large effect. The head of the male Falcated duck, a winter bird, appears bright green, but depending on the direction of the light, it appears black. The season I saw the Oriental Greenfinches this time was winter, and they looked a little bigger than sparrows, so I thought they were Grey-capped Greenfinches.
