葛西臨海公園にヒクイナが出るとのインターネット情報を見て公園を訪問した。ヒクイナは胸部や体側面の羽衣が赤褐色、 虹彩は濃赤色と色彩豊かなので人気がある。また、その独特の鳴き声は、源氏物語や徒然草の時代から「くひなたたく」と言いならわされてきた。
I visited Kasai Rinkai Park after looking at the internet information that Ruddy-breasted crake would appear in this park. The ruddy-breasted crake is popular because it is rich in colors with red-brown plumage and deep red iris. Also, its distinctive call has been told as “Rail nocks” from the era of Genji Monogatari and Turezuregusa.
上の池周辺に行くと10名位の方々がカメラを芳原方向に向けていた。この場所では午後1時から2時位の間にヒクイナを見られることが多いと聞いた。 静かに待っていると、午後2時頃ヒクイナが芳原から出てきて餌を探しながら水辺を歩いて行った。 こんなにゆっくりヒクイナを観察できるのは珍しいらしい、結構身軽に走ることもあるからだ。
When I reached at the place of the upper pond, about 10 people was setting camera towards the reed bed. I heard that you often saw the Ruddy-breasted crake between 1 PM and 2 PM in this place. When I was waiting quietly, the crake came out of the reed bed at about 2 PM and walked along the waterfront looking for bait. It seems rare that I could observe the crake with enough time because it sometimes runs quite lightly.

前日に続いてこの日（2018年3月14日）も葛西臨海公園を訪問した。 昨日と同じ場所で待っているとちょうど午後2時にヒクイナが芳原から出てきた。この日は前日と違って、ヒクイナは駆け足で移動しゆっくり餌を探す行動をしなかった。ヒクイナは大股でカメラを構えている我々の前を通り過ぎ 芳原に姿を消した。この間、たった数十秒だった。「今日はこれでショウが終わったな。」と言って多くの方々がカメラを片付け始めた。
Following the previous day, I visited Kasai Rinkai Park again this day (March 14, 2018). When I was waiting in the same place as yesterday, the crake came out of the reed bed at 2 PM.
Unlike the previous day, the crake moved quickly and did not act to search for bait slowly on this day. The crake passed in front of us taking photos with big stances and disappeared in the reed bed. It was only tens of seconds. Many people began taking away the camera saying “This is the end of the show today.”

私が二日続けて撮影に来た理由は、望遠レンズにテレコンバーターをつけると画像は拡大されるがピントの甘い画像になるようだと思ったからだ （AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR + TELECONVERTER TC-17E II）。 テレコンバーターありの前日画像となしのこの日の画像を比較すると確かにその違いを確認できた。
