南極とオーストラリア以外の全ての大陸に分布し、日本には冬鳥として渡来するコミミズク, Short-eared owl, a species of typical owl which occurs on all continents except Antarctica and Australia and moves south including Japan in winter.
コミミズクは羽ばたき方を変えることにより特徴のある変幻自在な飛び方をする。それはガとかコウモリのような飛び方とも表現される。

日が沈むころ、コミミズクは杭の上の止まって飛ばなくなった。もう暗いし今日はここまでだな、と思って私はまた歩き始めた。この日、午前中にオオハクチョウ、ミコアイサ、トモエガモに、午後にハヤブサ、ノスリ、コミミズクに出会えた。幸運だったとは言え10km以上歩いた。
As the sunset, the owl perched on a pile and stopped flying. I started walking again thinking that this was the end of today. Today I could meet the Whooper swan, the Smew and the Baikal teal in the morning and the Peregrine falcon, the Eastern buzzard and the Short-eared owl in the afternoon. Although it was lucky, I walked more than 10 km today.
