潜水に適応し最長の赤道横断移動をするワタリ集団、ハシボソミズナギドリ, Short-tailed shearwater, famous for the longest trans-equatorial migrations and adapted for diving after prey.
2016年5月26日、船橋市にあるふなばし三番瀬海浜公園を散歩した。前回（5月12日）来た時には沢山のシギやチドリを見ることができたが、 5月下旬になってシギやチドリは北に去ってしまったようだった。でも、防潮堤の近くの海面に黒っぽいカモメのような水鳥が浮かんでいた（10羽程度）。
「黒いカモメさん、どこから来たの？」「私たちはカモメじゃないよ、ニュージーランドから来たんだ。」
On May 26, 2016, I strolled in Funabashi Sanbanze Seaside Park in Funabashi city. Last time (May 12), I was able to see many snipes and plovers, but they have left for the north this time at the end of May. However there was a flock of black bird like seagull on the sea (about 10).
“Where are you from, black gull?” “We are not the gull; we are from the New Zealand.”
「えっ！もしかして、長距離の渡りで有名なミズナギドリさんたち？」 「そうだよ、これからアラスカに行くんだ。向こうの海には沢山食べ物があるからね。」
「毎年そんなに旅するの？」「それが私たちの生き方さ。私たちは水空両用の翼を持っているから、途中で潜水して魚を捕りながら旅するんだ。」
“Oh! Are you happened to be the shearwater, famous for long-distance travel?” ”Yeah, we are going to Alaska. There is a lot of food in the sea over there.”
“Do you travel that far every year?” “It is our way of life. We have special wings having function to fly and to swim, so we catch fish diving deeply in the sea on the way of the travel.”
カモメとは異なりくちばしの先が鉤状に尖っているのでミズナギドリのようだ。全身が茶褐色っぽいのでハイイロミズナギドリか ハシボソミズナギドリらしい。この2種は大変良く似ていて区別が難しい。後者は前者よりくちばしが短く細いという特徴があるので、 BHI (Bill Head Index)を定義して数値判定を行った。その結果、このミズナギドリはハシボソミズナギドリと判定された。
These birds seem the shearwaters because they have the bill with hook form tip unlike gulls. They seem to be Sooty shearwater or Short-tailed shearwater because the plumage is dark brownish. These two species resemble closely very much and are difficult to distinguish. Defining BHI (Bill Head Index), I tried original numerical determination by focusing the characteristic that the latter has shorter bill than the former. As a result, this shearwater was identified to be the Short-tailed shearwater.
