サンタ・クルス島のバン, Common gallinule of Santa Cruz Island

2015年9月11日、サンタ・クルス（Santa Cruz）島中央部（Highland地区）にある ゾウガメ育成地を見学した。 林に囲まれた広い自然の草原だ。乾季になるとゾウガメはこの地区に集まるという。広い草原には所々に池がある。池周辺の草原をバンが歩いていた。 白い下尾羽以外全身が暗い褐色、黄色っぽい脚そして額にはくちばしが延長したような赤っぽい「額板」がある。 日本で見かけるバンとそっくりだ。こんな絶海の孤島にもバンが生息するのかな、と驚いた。

On September 11, 2015, we saw Highland district of Santa Cruz Island to grow Galapagos tortoises. The place is a wide natural grassy plain among forests, and it is said that the Galapagos tortoises gather here when it is the dry season. There are ponds here and there. A gallinule was waling the grassy plain around the pond. The gallinule has dark plumage apart from the white undertail, yellow legs and a red frontal shield. The young are browner and lack the red shield. It looks just like Common moorhen to see in Japan. I was surprised to see the bird inhabiting such a solitary island.

旧大陸に住むバンに近い種であるが、新大陸に住むこのクイナは2011年に別種に分類された。

Wikipedia: The Common gallinule, Gallinula galeata is a bird in the family Rallidae. It was split from the common moorhen by the American Ornithologists' Union in July 2011. It lives around well-vegetated marshes, ponds, canals, and other wetlands in the Americas. The species is not found in the polar regions or many tropical rainforests. Elsewhere, the common gallinule is likely the most commonly seen rail species in much of North America, excepting the American coot in some regions.
