クレインは木版画を制作する工房でイタリア・ルネサンス美術の作品などを彫版する修行をはじめ、やがてロセッティらが率いる中世や初期ルネサンスを規範とするラファエル前派から影響を受けるようになった。この素描は、おそらくギリシャ神話の豊饒の女神「ケレス」を題材にして、ラファエル前派が好んだ物憂げな女性像や鳥などのモチーフが繊細は筆致で描かれている。

Crane began training in engraving works of Italian Renaissance art in a woodblock print studio, and eventually came to be influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite school, led by Rossetti and others, whose model was the medieval and early Renaissance. This drawing is probably based on Ceres, the goddess of fertility from Greek mythology, and features motifs such as languid female figures and birds that were favored by the Pre-Raphaelites, all rendered in delicate brush strokes.
ウォルター・クレイン, Walter Crane 1845-1915
イギリスの画家、グラフィック・デザイナー。絵本、壁紙、テキスタイル、陶磁器、ステンドグラス当を幅広く手掛ける。1870年代以降モリスと交流し、社会主義活動も行う。アート・ワーカーズ・ギルド・を設立。アーツ・アンド・クラフツ展覧会協会初代会長としてアーツ・アンド・クラフツ運動を推進した。王立美術大学RCA等の校長を務め、美術教育者としても貢献した。

British painter and graphic designer. He worked on a wide range of picture books, wallpaper, textiles, ceramics, and stained glass. From the 1870s onwards he was associated with Morris and also engaged in socialist activities. He founded the Art Workers Guild. He promoted the Arts and Crafts movement as the first president of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Association. He served as principal of the Royal College of Art, RCA, and other institutions, and also contributed as an art educator.
