モリスの新婚時代の自宅レッド・ハウスのバラの生垣がヒントになったと言われる。バラに集う虫、虫たち目当ての鳥の姿まで生き生きと描き出され、部屋に居ながら庭の雰囲気を味わえるような壁紙である。鳥はモリスの親友でレッド・ハウスを設計した建築家のフィリップ・ウェッブが描いたもの。モリスの初期のデザインの特徴は自然のモチーフを写実的に捉えた初々しさである。やがて植物だけでなく自身で描いた鳥なども加えつつ、より洗練されたデザインを練り上げていくが、自然に対して抱く感覚を暮らしに取り入れることを目指す姿勢は、生涯一貫している。

It is said that the inspiration came from the rose hedge at Red House, Morris’ home when he was a newlywed. The wallpaper vividly depicts the insects that gather around the roses, as well as the birds that hunt the insects, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of a garden while staying in your room. The bird was painted by Philip Webb, a close friend of Morris and the architect who designed the Red House. A characteristic of early Morris designs was the freshness of realistically capturing natural motifs. He eventually developed his more sophisticated designs, adding not only plants but also birds he had drawn himself, but he was determined to incorporate his sense of nature into his daily life. This attitude has remained consistent throughout his life.
