冬に備え果実を蓄える事（貯食）もある賢い小鳥、ヤマガラ, Varied tit, a clever little bird that sometimes stores fruits in preparation for winter.

今回、公園でエゴノキの実を取るために集まるヤマガラを見ることができた。

一本のエゴノキが沢山の実をつけていた。実はまだ熟していないようだが、数羽のヤマガラが入れ代わり立ち代わりやってきて 実の軸をくわえて飛び去った。

エゴノキの果実の果皮には毒成分を含むが、ヤマガラは種子に穴をあけて中身を食べる。
The pericarp of the fruit of Japanese snowbell contains toxic components, but the Varied tit pierces the seed and eats the contents.

エゴノキの果実は大きい種子を1個含む、熟すと果皮は不規則に破れて種子が露出する。果皮には有毒なエゴサポニンを多く含む。

以前シジュウカラ属（Parus）に分類されていたが、2013年の分子系統解析の後にSittiparusに移動された。
