ベンケイヤマガラはヤマガラの群れと一緒に行動しているようだ。今度はヤマガラが現れた。両者の姿は似ている。ヤマガラの場合は、頭部と喉の部分が黒く、額から頬、後頭部にかけて白っぽい。翼は青みがかった灰色に見える。ベンケイヤマガラの場合は、頭部は薄い黒だが、喉の部分は黒くない。翼は青みがかった灰色に見えるが、他の部分は茶色っぽい鉄さびのような色だ。

In the case of Varied tits, the head and throat are black, and the forehead, cheeks, and back of the head are whitish. The wings appear bluish-gray. In the case of the Benkei Tit, the head is pale black, but the throat is not black. The wings appear bluish-gray, but the rest of the body is a brownish rust-like color.
ベンケイヤマガラが正式名称なのか、ヤマガラとの遺伝子の違いが調べられているのかなど、不明だ。生物に広く見られる多型（polymorphism）なのだろうか？
